Key West to the Dry Tortugas

Many visitors to Key West and the Florida Keys come just to make a very special trip to Fort Jefferson National Park in the Dry Tortugas.

The Dry Tortugas are very popular with history buffs for its colorful role in the days of prirates and skullduggery, in the Civil War and for the fort's most famous prisoner (Dr. Mudd was imprisoned there), as well as for its fame in sports history as a fishing destination for Key West Hero Papa Hemingway. The national park is a popular destination for birders as part of the Florida Birding Trail and a popular spot for camping.

The remote island, 70 miles from Key West, is called "Dry" because there is no fresh water on the island and Tortugas for the Turtles that can still be found while snorkeling and diving around the fort and the surrounding coral reefs.
