by GuestBlogStar on September 20, 2012

Blogging is obviously a powerful marketing tool for whose looking to increase web traffic. The shear amount of blogs online is staggering so just creating a blog and posting articles is not enough to increase traffic and gain loyal followers and customers. Take a look at this list of ten simple things any blogger can do to increase the marketability of their blog.

  1. Write Often and Well

Posting well writing articles is a must for increasing the exposure to your blog. Your goal should be to create loyal readers who come back often and even talk about you or post your articles on their social media. Write helpful informative articles that are easy and quick to get through with words, images, bullet points, or even some video.

  2. Use Comments

Blogs are an interactive media that allow readers to connect with other readers or the author. When a reader leaves a comment on the blog try responding to them. Comments are very valuable and should be respected by your community so set up some comment guidelines so people can feel safe leaving opinions. The blog comments can turn into a conversation and then into a community where conversations flow freely with your moderation and guidance.

  3. Use Social Media

Social media sites have a well established presence on the internet and it is a good idea to use these tools to promote your blog. Update your Facebook, Twitter or Reddit accounts with updates often to let the users on those sites know you have stuff going on over at your blog.

  4. Don’t Forget Analytics

Take some time to look at your blog statistics. Use web analytics to learn the backend story of your blog. There is tons of information to explore with web analytics. Learn who is coming to your site, where they are from, how long they stay on your blog, what are the most popular pages, what keywords are sending your traffic, and what sites are referring traffic your way. Learning these bits of info and more can really help take your blog to the next level.

  5. Tags Drive Traffic

Make sure you are tagging your posts with descriptive keywords to optimize the blog for more traffic. Tags are like links that can be noticed by search engines and help readers find you. When you use tags wisely the traffic from sources like Google, Technorati or other blog search engines will increase. Longer niche tags are better than short one word tags for marketing purposes.

  6. Mailing Lists

If you want to stay in contact with people visiting your blog you need to collect email addresses. This is ideal for someone selling products or services. Adding a form to leave a email address is a simple way to collect that info. You may want to send announcements about the company or blog, let readers know about guest blogging opportunities, have reading vote for your blog if your up for an award, or simply send more information about product sales to your reader base.

  7. Activate Akismet

Stop wasting time moderating comments that are completely spam. Let a spam filter do the work for you. Using a service like Akismet can be trusted to take care of all the unwanted and annoying spam comments that can plague a blog.

  8. Try Feedburner not RSS

Feedburner is a service that can give you detailed statistics about your RSS subscribers. This will allow you to analyze and optimize your blog posts even more and give you knowledge about who likes your blog enough that they subscribe. Normal RSS doesn’t provide this detail to you about who is subscribing.

  9. Build a Sitemap

A sitemap is a table of contents for the search engines to crawl. They use it to better index and classify your blog making everything you do much easier to find. Build a XML sitemap and submit it to the search engines. They will do the rest.

  10. Backup the Blog

It is wise to backup everything you do in case somebody hacks into your blog or somehow you loose your articles and comments. This may not be a marketing strategy to increase revenue for your blog or company but if you let everything go to waste because you didn’t save the work it will all be for nothing in the end.

Good luck and have fun making the blog you work so hard on that much better. Remember that in the end it really comes down to fresh and useful content that will set you apart from your competition. Good luck creating your blog identity.
